Gateway to the Stars

Building a brighter future by protecting the night sky.

What is Gateway to the Stars?

Gateway to the Stars is a community-led initiative celebrating and protecting one of the Illinois Valley’s most remarkable natural resources: our dark night skies.

Bringing together residents, businesses, community organizations, tourism partners, and public agencies, the initiative connects dark-sky stewardship with recreation, education, tourism, accessibility, and community development.

From stargazing and astrophotography to responsible outdoor lighting and visitor experiences, Gateway to the Stars is helping build a future where our night skies remain something residents can treasure and visitors can come here to experience.

Why Dark Skies Matter

Artificial light has transformed the night in communities around the world. Here in the Illinois Valley, we’re fortunate to still experience remarkably dark skies, where stars, planets, and the Milky Way can remain visible away from excessive nighttime lighting.

Thoughtful outdoor lighting can help preserve that experience while still providing the illumination businesses, homes, and public spaces need.

Protecting dark skies doesn’t mean turning off the lights. It means using thoughtful lighting that puts the right amount of light in the right place, at the right time, without unnecessary glare or light spilling into the night sky.
